To meet the needs of one of the fastest-growing veteran populations in the country, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is adding a new outpatient clinic to the Hampton VA Healthcare System in Hampton Roads, Va.
Partnering with developer The Molasky Group of Companies (Las Vegas) Gresham Smith (Charlotte, N.C.) is providing planning, architecture, and interior design services to create a human-centered space that uses the latest technology to elevate quality of care.
Located on a 25-acre site at the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center campus in Chesapeake, Va., near the Cypress Landing veterans housing, the new facility will reflect the surrounding region, taking cues from coastal culture to honor Hampton Roads as the home to the world’s largest naval base.
On the exterior, a large linear expanse of glazing will mimic the shape of an aircraft carrier, while the covered drop-off area on the front of the building will resemble ship masts.
To promote wellness and connect patients, visitors and staff to nature, the design will capitalize on the site’s existing wetlands to create outdoor seating and respite areas, as well as a healing garden in a park-like setting.
Staff will also have access to a dedicated outdoor space and multiple balconies for respite during breaks.
Inside, the interiors palette will use cool earth tones including blues, greens, and grays, and wood cladding on ceilings and in elevator banks throughout the design. Floor-to ceiling fenestration in the main lobby, combined with large windows on all sides of the building, will flood the space with natural light.
The 205,000-square-foot, two-story building will house primary care, audiology and speech pathology, mental health, ophthalmology, prosthetic and sensory aid, laboratory, and pharmacy services, as well as CT, X-ray, mammography, MRI, and ultrasound technologies.
To increase operational efficiencies and promote personalized care, patient care spaces will be arranged around central staff work areas within each clinic, following VA’s Patient-Aligned Care Team (PACT) model of care delivery.
Construction is expected to start in late 2022, and the facility is expected to open in the fall of 2024.
