Dorothy Lawrence: The 7 Times Texas Super Lawyers Rising Star and Her Plans for the Future

Dorothy K. Butler Lawrence is one of the most inspirational women in the United States today. Apart from being a 7 times Texas Super Lawyers Rising Star, New York Weekly Times listed her as one of the top 10 incredibly impactful women to look out for in 2022. She was chosen by Austin Monthly as a top attorney in the years 2020 and 2021. Dorothy often says that the road to success can never be an easy one or a smooth one. As a teenager, she struggled to find employment as she graduated from a Louisiana Law School. She wanted to live in Austin and work there, but no one would listen to her because she didn’t graduate from a Texas law school.  That’s when she decided to open up her own law firm, the Dorothy Butler Law Firm, in the hopes that it would help her find eventual employment.

Dorothy is happy that she made the decision to make her own firm. Her firm has garnered immense success over the years. Dorothy’s incredible success as a lawyer is partly because of the systematic way in which she works. She starts with clients needing assistance with one legal matter, whether it be bankruptcy, a divorce, or probate, and can then offer assistance with tax preparation or updating their will. Dorothy builds a positive rapport and strong relationship with all her clients. A client who hires her services once stays hers forever.

Initially, the Dorothy Butler Law Firm was mostly dealing with bankruptcy and related issues. Now it has turned into a full-blown law firm with exceptionally talented attorneys who can give clients a full law firm experience. She has many more plans for the future. Dorothy wants to continue working as a tax and bankruptcy lawyer in the Central Texas area and develop a strong presence there. Dorothy recently started working as a tax expert in collaboration with other divorce attorneys. Continuing to do so is one of her major future plans as she has extensive expertise as a tax attorney while also having a strong knowledge of the divorce and family law system. As a long-term goal, Dorothy wants to grow her firm. Currently, she has four long-term attorneys at the firm, including herself. She is looking forward to bringing more and more talented attorneys to the Dorothy Butler Law Firm who are willing to work with her and the firm for the long term.

Dorothy considers herself more than just a lawyer. She is also an educator who wants people to know about the intricacies of the law. She stays quite active on her Instagram, @yourtrendylawyer, and her Facebook page, @dorothybutlerlawfirm. Dorothy makes the seemingly dry topics of law really fun by relating them to the daily lives of the people. The audience loves listening to her because they can relate to what she says.

The Dorothy Butler Law Firm is a firm where the attorneys and staff are all friends in and out of the office.  The office is decorated with large Disney murals on the walls. She goes on vacations with her and her colleagues’ children. She showcases her professional and personal life on her Instagram and Facebook pages so that her clients feel connected to her and comfortable when they discuss some of their lives’ toughest situations.

Interestingly, Dorothy Lawrence is also a naturally talented musician. She quit music as a full-time career after 9/11 but didn’t quit music altogether. She is a woodwind specialist and plays many instruments such as the oboe, English horn, clarinet, saxophone, and flute. One of her future goals is to continue performing whenever and wherever feasible. Her next goal is to take an audition with the Austin Symphony and perform with them. She is also a member of the Women’s Symphony League and hopes to join the board of the ASO in the future. Dorothy believes she will soon accomplish her long-term goal from school – to be a lawyer by day and a symphony musician by night.
