Abdul El-Sayed Wins Michigan Senate Debate Because Mike Rogers Can’t Shake Trump

The debate between the candidates for Michigan’s open US Senate seat was ugly. Mike Rogers can’t run a successful Senate campaign by cozying up to Donald Trump and running on the issues. Instead, Rogers has to make the debate about Abdul El-Sayed.

In contrast, El-Sayed spent the debate that was loaded with personal attacks linking Rogers to Trump and the president’s unpopular policies.

The debate exchange of the night came when El-Sayed said:

He wanted to make this about him or me, but the question is about you. Can you afford your gas? Can you afford your groceries? Under this guy who’s gonna rubber-stamp everything Donald Trump tells him to rubber-stamp, you’re gonna continue to pay way more out of your nose because he works for corporations and Donald Trump.

Some people might suggest that this was not the kind of debate that would help voters make a decision, but the opposite was true.

The debate was deeply insightful, just not in the way that Mike Rogers intended.

Rogers wants to have it both ways. He wants to “other” El-Sayed while distancing himself from Trump.
